Georgia Day of Code is a free, virtual event that introduces computer science and coding skills through engaging learning resources suitable for students of all ages and skill levels.
Day of Code is an all-day event (9-3 p.m.), executed in person with classrooms of students present, with a live stream accessible to schools and individuals interested in following along.
Event partners and sponsors provide instruction to students during 45-minute sessions throughout the day.
By addressing these challenges, the Georgia Day of Code helps to play a crucial role in making computer science education more accessible and effective across the state.
Computer Science Awareness Gap
As of 2021, only 51% of U.S. high schools offered computer science courses, with rural and urban schools, as well as those serving low-income students, less likely to provide such courses.
Foundational Knowledge
Without structured, engaging learning experiences, students might struggle to build foundational coding skills. Access to high-quality computer science education is vital for equipping students with essential skills in our technology-driven world.
Gender Confidence Gap
Despite high interest, many female students doubt their abilities in STEM fields. A study found that only 59% of girls feel proficient in math and science, a decrease from 73% in 2017.
Our Solution
Introduce Computer Science
Research indicates that students who participate in CS programs are more likely to pursue postsecondary education by 24-34%, thereby opening more opportunities for advanced studies and careers.
Encourage Participation
Initiatives aimed at increasing female representation in CS, such as the Girls Who Code program, have resulted in participants being significantly more likely to major in a CS-related field by at least 10%.
Provide Equal Access
This virtual event is accessible state-wide, ensuring that the opportunity to learn coding skills is free and available to all students.
Kick off the day with two dynamic, hands-on workshops that blend creativity and technology! Students will dive into artificial intelligence and coding through interactive activities—from exploring how AI “thinks” to designing their own virtual fashion assistant.
Gain insights from college students, industry professionals, and career experts as they share real-world perspectives on coding pathways, the power of AI in today’s job market, and emerging opportunities in technology. Each panel concludes with an interactive Q&A session.
12:05p – 1:10p: Coding Workshops
Dive into hands-on Python sessions designed for middle and high school students to strengthen coding skills and build confidence.
1:15p – 1:45p: Community Engagement Hour: AI & Computer Science for Families and Educators
This informative hour brings together families, educators, and community partners toexplore practical AI resources for the home and gain insight into Georgia’s statewideComputer Science Initiatives. Learn how to support students in the digital age and discover upcoming Computer Science (CS) tools and opportunities from the Georgia Department ofEducation (GADOE.)
